The first festival was held in 1993 year, initiated by the Artistic Director of the Mariinsky Theatre, Valery Gergiev. According to the maestro, first festival he conceived as a "musical gift" to the city of the team and soloists of the Mariinsky Theatre, agreed to take part in it.
